(More customer reviews)I like everything about this rack - except two things. I wish they would have ran a bolt for the actual rack part right through the roof. I say that because I have two Kayaks that I mount with J-hooks, and they have an incredible up draft, thus pulling up on the rack. This rack will take a strong downward weight, but I just don't trust the design of one washer from keeping my kayaks from flying off into the highway (like with my older rack (a nightmare)). I'm probably going to buy a bolt and modify it to make the bolt go through the roof of my topper to make it stronger.

The second thing I would do is go with all aluminum parts. They used a sturdy plastic part between the rail and the rack. I thought I saw at Prorac they had one with all metal version, but I couldn't find it anywhere to purchase. . .perhaps coming down the road.

All in all, I would recommend it. For the money, it's the best rack I could fine.

The system to lock the cross bar to your roof bars, is not optimum, and very difficult to install.
The bars are light aluminium, look great, but are highly flexible. Something you would like to avoid on your roof.
Moreover, the locking system does not tighten the cross bars properly, they can slide from left to right when driving.
So, I guess you got my point,
don't buy these....
spend 3-4 time the price and get proper cross bars from thule or yakima.

Lund 601012 Black 37.5" x 56.6" Roof Top Cargo Rack Review

(More customer reviews)When I first went to assemble the two pieces to make a whole basket, the tubes going from one piece (male) into the other (female) did not fit.Further investigation showed that the tubing on the female side was bent (not from shipping), and to make it work, I had to spend about 1/2 hour re-opening the tubes.

After finally putting the basket together, it came time to mount it on the roof of my 2008 Highlander.Keep in mind, before I bought this rack I contacted the company to inqire whether or not it would fit my car.I was told that yes, it had universal fittings so it would fit all car roof racks.

Well it did have universal fittings, but they were so simplistic that I had to spend 1 1/2 days, and trips back and forth to hardware stores, to make it work.The reason, even when the clamps were tightened as tight as they would go, the rack slid back and forth and would not tighten firmly.

To make it work (and I never did get it "tight"), I had to use a metal cutting saw to cut parts of it away, put jerryrigged blocks between the basket and the crossbar, and tape it tightly to the crossbar.

These problems would have been more acceptable if I had paid half as much.I can live with the imperfections in the tubes (since at this price I didn't expect the quality of a Thule or a Yakima), but to have to spend the time and money to make this product safe to travel on my roof at up to 80 miles per hour, is unaccepable.

The only way I would recommend this product to anyone is if Lund puts a truly universal clamping system with it that is uncomplicated and easy to understand.Otherwise, be prepared to use extraordinary measures to safely attach it to your roof.

I did run into one hitch when I found a nut was missing from one of the locking knobs. A trip to the local hardware store for a 1/4" nut solved the problem. Nice basket, fits well on the Xterra.

SportRack Roof Basket Review

(More customer reviews)... it didn't marry easily with it's two ends. Something got lost in the template for it's counterparts resulting in misaligned connecting tubes by 3/8's of an inch. An avoidable, manufacturing quality control issue.

Now, fighting the sturdy and rigid construction of this rack is no easy task. And maybe I was unlucky in this particular item. But I ended up having to use metal files to expand the feeding taper on the "male" end, create a taper on the inside of the "female" end, then soap both surfaces, use a wooden carpenters clamp w/shim for the male side to compensate for uneven pressure, squeeze just till the pipe started to crush then whack the end of the rack with a heavy, soft rubber mallet, then touchup with rustproof flat black and presto! ... an hour later. Also, the air deflector is sub-par-flimsy. Don't over tighten or it may crack, or use it as a template to custom make one from aluminum plate.

Considering the relative higher cost of comparably designed racks, and the undeniable ruggedness of this one, I would have spent at least another $150 or more for a final 66" X 39" dimension. I guess it was worth the hour spent making it work.

5 stars for the rack itself, (less one for the unexpected workout)
