(More customer reviews)No Jeep enthusiast needs to be told that the new Wrangler JK is popular, nor why: new features and conveniences make it a better and more comfortable vehicle both on and off the payment. It's simultaneously more of a car and more of a Jeep, all while being a better value than the previous TJ and YJ models.
Among its new features are improved versions of both the traditional hardtop and soft-top options--the Freedom Top and the Sunrider. The Freedom Top, unlike previous hardtops, has three segmented panels. This design allows for up to seven configurations ranging from closed to semi-open to completely topless. The segmentation also has the added benefit of making the third, back section much more manageable for two people to handle. The Sunrider is likewise miles beyond its predecessors. It has a convertible feature that allows you to create an open "sun roof" without going completely topless.
So, given the ingenuity of these two new popular options, is there any room for a third alternative? Absolutely. Enter the Skytop.
Wade Automotive has come up with an excellent middle option between traditional hard and soft-tops that allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds, quicker and more conveniently than with the other standard JK tops. The Skytop is an acrylic panel that serves as a window to the world above. It attaches to the roll bars via Velcro and uses the same channel that both the hard and soft-tops lock into, creating an excellent seal.
The Skytop allows you to enjoy the topless feel without actually being topless. You can enjoy the sun without getting sunburned, cruise down the road without you or your backseat passengers getting windblown, and be protected from any sudden changes in weather.
But what if you want to be completely exposed to Mother Nature? Simply unstrap the Velcro, take the down the lightweight panel, and store it conveniently in the back. Removing the two front panels on the Freedom Top is a five-minute, six step process that requires a place to store the panels. With the Sunrider, opening the "sunroof" is a ten-minute, nine step exercise.
It's even more difficult and time consuming to take down the traditional tops. To go from Freedom Top up to completely topless you'll need a #40 and a #30 Torx bit, a ratchet, another adult to help you remove the back panel, a place to store the 6 bolts (8 in the JK Unlimited) and two screws you'll be removing, and better than 10 minutes of your time. Taking down the Sunrider isn't much quicker or easier.
And priced around $200, the Skytop is significantly cheaper than the two traditional alternatives. All in all, the Skytop is an inexpensive, easy to use addition to the Wrangler JK that epitomizes the philosophy behind all the new JK features--it makes your vehicle a more comfortable car and a more capable Jeep.
